Smokin' Tunes...

05 July 2012
Yesterday was the 4th of July and here in Athens the air was thick with smoke from grills and fireworks.  We added our contribution to the grill part but there were no fireworks to be had for us.  With 4 yappy dogs, why would we do that to ourselves?

Grilling out is something that neither one of us has a lot of experience with.  Well, we've always enjoyed the fruits of labors of other, mainly better, grilling folks but have fumbled around a bit with our own experiences.  But practice makes perfect and our meal last night came together without nary a hiccup...and the food was amazing.  Funny enough, we had plan to grill this week even before we realized that it was almost the 4th.  Remember my post about forgetting holidays and the like?  It happened yet again.

Since most of our friends were out of town for the week or longer due to weddings and vacations and living elsewhere, Brady and I had an evening with just the two of us.

Our friend Jeremy recently gifted us with not only some wonderful Nina Simone records but also his vintage tube record player.  Oh, oh wow!  This thing has so much character and it sounded incredible.  It even has a.m. radio. You have to fiddle with the knobs at the start of each record in order to adjust the tone accordingly...so it really is a labor of love to get to listen to all the crackles and pops and tunes.  I hope the neighbors didn't mind our music marathon all evening.

Gor blimey!  It is so damn hard for me to take good looking food pictures.  I'm tempted to pout about it right about now.  Trust me when I say that the food really was very good even if it looks a bit unappealing in my photo presentation.  Just for the record (ha!  record!), we had grilled local squash and zucchini, grilled corn with Vermont butter and fresh rosemary, and grilled turkey burgers on dark rye buns with arugula and some light condiments.  The amount leftover is a bit insane but we have excellent culinary plans for them in upcoming meals.

Oh, and we chose Bedknobs and Broomsticks as our movie selection but only made it to the end of Portobello Road musical number before we had to call it a night.  Want to see some crazy dance moves and silliness?  Go here.  I have to say that Angela Lansbury is an amazing woman and I tend to forget what a great actress she is.

I hope that you had an excellent evening as well...and that your day today is pretty darn good too!

Today I'm thankful for my hard working local organic farmers.

My Life In Pictures...

29 May 2012
Right now our house is extremely crowded in one room and almost bare everywhere else!  Yay for seeing the end of months of packing up, sorting, selling and donating our goods!

I don't have time for a long post since we have people to see, things to clean and the like...and Beryl is dumping tons of rain on us today.  I'll leave you with a quick summary of what's been going on in the last week or so...

Visited Lee and her teenage chickens.  One actually flew into a tree!  I had no idea that some chickens have upwards of a 10 foot flight (straight) capability.  Wow!

Yellow flies tore me the hell up on our kayak adventure last week.  I hate those suckers.  I still have bruises/marks.

Our older kitty (Chubby) killed a squirrel, ate it and then slept all day.  She sure was proud of herself!

Snuggle buddies make me smile...

We've had a couple of gatherings in the last few days.  The first led to some, um, interesting artwork.  I asked everyone to paint something on a small canvas that represented them...so we'd have new and sentimental artwork to hang in the house.  Weeeellllllllll, I don't think that painting can be hung anywhere other than the closet!  Our friends are silly...but they make excellent black bean burgers!

Kitty view on a rainy dog day...

Went to the Gold Plate for a tasty breakfast this morning (gah!  so much food!) and then saw the best plate ever!  Words to live by, eh?

I'm off to run errands with my Mom, pack some more and then go to another party tonight with friends.  Excellent end to the day!

Have a wonderful day!
