A Visit From Adam...

10 August 2012

Like I said yesterday, I was beyond thrilled to have my best friend Adam come up to Athens and visit for a spell.  We laughed, ate, talked, drank on the porch during an impressive thunderstorm, enjoyed bubble tea, went thrifting, made ginger ale, and visited downtown Athens during the hottest part of the day.  The latter was not the smartest decision but we had a blast.  Um, maybe too much fun!

I made a roasted tomato and garlic dip (I'll post the recipe soon!) with fresh zucchini rounds, and a yogurt and caper spread with salmon and pita crisps.  They went perfectly with my chicken/rooster wine and the cool porch breezes.

Brady and Adam took over my desk area with their laptops and coffee and stuff.  Don't they look so serious?  Even though they were just watching skateboarding videos and checking Facebook?

I made a caprese frittata for our breakfast instead of the usual eggs and vegan sausage, and it was excellent!  So fresh and summery and delicious.  Again, recipe will posted soon...

All this happened.  In public.  In front of one of the busiest restaurants in Athens.  AWESOME!

Yep, this one!

We also found:
- a great old truck that I wanted to take home with me because I've always wanted one
-the place I visited on my 2nd night in Athens and will never go back to because I drank too much on an empty stomach and I probably talked the bartenders ear off and then I had to walk 2 miles home in my seriously uncomfortable shoes...wowzer...
-some some of the best graffiti/paintings I've ever seen...and I'm going to have make a whole series of photo shoots involving stuff like this
-a few vintage shops that had coats out in preparation for the upcoming cold months

I wish Adam could've stayed for much longer than 2 days but he has so much to do to get ready for school, and to get his new home set up and comfortable.  It'll probably be February (yikes!) before I will see him again and that makes me miss him already!  Ok, I need to concentrate on the positive and remember the fun we had on this trip.  Right?  Right!  And I will think about all the new memories we'll get to make in February...

Today, I am thankful for my friend.

My Life In Pictures...

09 August 2012
I'm having so much darn fun with Adam visiting!  We thrifted, ate a delicious spread, drank wine and watched a major thunderstorm roll by.  Oh, I saw lightning hit the house across the way but luckily no one was hurt and no fire.  Whew!  Now he and the hubby have gone down the way to get some fresh roasted coffee from Jittery Joe's (which is so good but none for me, thanks...I'm off the coffee!), so I have a quick moment in which to post.

Lately I've been using my new T2i a lot...which means a neglected Instagram.  I did take a few shots though...

Took several rural road trips.

Took a trip to Marietta to visit Brady's grandmother B.

Ate tiny cupcakes from a local bakery.  I love the finger holes in the cardboard so you can grab them with ease...and little mess.

GA summer nights = tank and boxers

New incense purchase = happy space

My new addiction.

Fresh made bagels with goat cheese and my strawberry-rosemary jam.

College students started arriving last week...some in more interesting ways than others.

A dinner for one while Brady is at band practice.

Brady and I split a peanut butter cream pie at The Grit.  Yum!

Showing Adam how to make ginger ale.

Adding to my brooch collection.  The bottom one is my newest purchase (10 cents!) and will hold my sunglasses/glasses in a pinch.

Now we are going to make some breakfast (eggs, veggie sausage with jam, homemade biscuits and fruit) and head back out into the thick of things in Athens.  So excited to explore some new places!

Happy Thursday!

Valdosta And Vintage...

07 August 2012
It's raining again today in Athens but I'm glad to have it since we desperately need it up here in the Piedmont.  The only downfall from the rain is that my chair restoration project has come to a complete stop.  One can't paint in super humid weather.  I'm not too disappointed though, as the rain definitely has priority over my soon-to-be-super-awesome chairs.  They can wait and so can I!  Right?  Right!

Speaking of rain, remember how I said the other day that I was dreaming of fall?  Well, it is obviously dreaming of me too.  It found its way to me when I was gifted with some excellent vintage goods this weekend...all in a fall theme.  Yes!

I cannot wait to drink some hot cider out of these 1982 era tumblers!

My camera bag search is over.  This was still in wrapping paper!  Mint.  YES!  Love my high tech backdrop?  Ha!

An old holiday tin holds a plethora of mint condition buttons!

I'm going to dress up some basic cardigans with these lovely earth tone ones...

Did you know that jet is formed from a compression of wood and salt water?  Amazing stuff.

Spooky font, stories and pictures about Savannah, GA bring an early Halloween feeling...

Did I squeal when I saw this coat?  Um, does this southern lady like her sweet tea?  Heck yeah!

This is only a small bit of what I was lucky to have handed to me by my good friends during their move(s) and subsequent cleanup.   I also found a vintage butter dish, a drum kit for Brady (argh!  my ears!) and a few other odds-and-ends that aren't pictured.  They'll be gathered on the next trip.

I'm very glad I got up at 6am on Saturday to drive to Valdosta to help a bit and to spend some quality time with my favorite folks. There was laughing and reminiscing, like when I was at Brady's folks, but this time with a healthy dose of tears too.  It was a bit overwhelming to know how much has changed for everyone in the last few months. We are starting to be blown to the winds like dandelion seeds.  I hope we can take root and grow strong and tall and resilient and determined but, damn it, I'm going to miss my friends like crazy.  But I'm glad I have so many people in my life that mean so much to me.  So glad.

I'm also glad to have great followers/readers/supporters like you.  Thanks for stopping by.  Oh, and big 'hi' to all you new folk!  Welcome, welcome, welcome!

U-Turn To The Gardens...

01 August 2012

Brandi and Zane are good friends of ours from when we lived in Valdosta, and it was great to see them this week in Athens for Zane's birthday.  While they were here we ate Pho, drank boocoodles of wine of the front porch, laughed til our sides hurt and took a small road trip to the Athens Botanical Gardens.  Brady and I have been before but I'm always looking for an excuse to go visit again...and again.  I just love the gardens!  And even though I missed our exit (oops!) and forgot my phone, I did remember my camera...and took lots of pictures during the cool, overcast, drizzly day.  You can click on the images to see them in a larger format and in all their detailed glory!

Does this one look like heart to you?

Aren't some of these flowers just incredible?  Were you able to guess what some of them were?  Hint: included are Papaya, Lady Slipper (very endangered), Hops, Lamb's Ear, Cannis Lily and more.  Some plants at the gardens that are not pictured (due to a sudden downpour and a hysterical fear of getting my camera wet) include a Voodoo Lily and a batch of Black Ginger.  Brandi is studying to become an ethno-botanist so she had some wonderful stories to tell about the plants that surrounded us.  All-in-all it was an excellent day and I'm planning on going again in August for the Botanical Gardens Annual Flea Market Fundraiser.  Fingers crossed that Brandi can come visit again in a few weeks and go with me!
