Some of you long term followers might remember our sweet ol' Toby dog. He was a Chihuahua rescue with a sad backstory (more on that here), a ferocious (and never-ending) bark and a side-tilt to his little head that never went away. He passed in his sleep right after our world trip last year and we still miss him something fierce...
In his memory we planted a Georgia Belle peach tree right by his grave, which is next to our front porch. At first it struggled a good deal but eventually produced 2 tiny peaches that the birds got to before we did. Considering it was a bare stick with fruit, I was super pleased and hopeful that the tree would flourish in time. Well, winter came and even though I prepared the tree as best as I could for the frigid temps, I started losing that hopefulness when the tree stayed stagnant and brown as spring waxed. *sigh*
But now? Look at that tree bloom! It's so beautiful! It also gained about two feet of growth and no longer needs the support beam it had for the last number of months. When I first saw those blooms, because I swear they all popped open overnight because I'd been watching this thing like a hawk, I gave a huge, whooping shout. Which I did when I saw those peaches prior. My poor neighbors have to deal with me yelling about plants/trees a lot but I just can't contain my excitement! My dreams of this tree taking root and growing strong are coming true...
Now, whenever I turn the car to drive down the driveway I get to see this beauty. Or if I'm sitting on the porch with the kitties and watching the uh-may-zing spring sunsets. Or if I'm working in the small raised garden under the kitchen window. It's there. It's comforting...
If you can't plant a tree or the like for the memory of your critter or other family member you can always use the Arbor Day Foundation to plant one for you. It's a lovely way to honor someone...
Today, I'm thankful for all the good memories.

that is so sweet! i'm glad it came back. we planted a rose bush for our first pug and i love seeing it bloom every year.
ReplyDeleteI wish that we owned our little clapboard home so we could watch his tree change year after year! I'll always know it's here, so that's comforting no matter what. I almost planted roses too but that peach tree called to me... :)
DeleteHow did I miss this? So beautiful Jen, I love that the tree is flowering in such a gorgeous way.
