Georgia Spring Is...

21 March 2016

I wish these pictures came with a scratch-n-sniff option because the smells floating around Athens right now would knock your socks off.  It's at once bitter-stinky-green, smoky, take-your-breath-away-sweet and dank.  If you've ever lived in the south then you know what I'm talking about!  Most everywhere smells good during the spring, true, but this is the season where the south shiiiiines...

  1. I know what you mean - where I grew up in northern NSW, we have this brightly coloured flowery weed which over runs everything called lantana - in spring/summer it has this distinctive sharp fragrance and along with the sound of the crickets, it always signifies the start of warmer weather.

    1. We have Lantana as well! It's more of a summer bloom here but it sure has that distinct smell you mentioned. And the butterflies love them so much. Such a nice beginning for that warmer weather...

Cherry blossoms and azaleas and daffodils and wild violets are some of the first things that bloom here. Although we just went hiking an hour or so north of Athens and found that things are still hibernating. The light says 'spring' but the mountains say 'ummmm, not just yet'. :)

    1. It seems like *everything* has bloomed overnight! Today, with the damp fog and drizzly rain, it was green and the air is so, so sweet. It's like the whole world is wearing perfume!
