Portland, Maine - Cryptozoology Museum...

27 October 2015

It's a low of 48 here in GA tonight so it's funny to look back at these photos from Portland taken less than a month ago and see myself in short sleeves.  Well, I think all pictures of my mug are funny but that's neither here nor there, right?  Heh.  But really, how have I not shared these photos til now?  At least I'm doing so near Halloween when all the things pictured are more fitting by their spooktacularness.

Cryptozoology, in case you haven't hear of this not-really-an-official-science before, is the study of animals/creatures that are rumored to exist but of which there is little-to-no physical proof that they do.  Bigfoot.  Nessie.  Giant beavers.  Ice man.  Skunk ape, which has been spotted in my old town of Valdosta, GA!  Jackalope.  And on, and on, and on.  I've long been fascinated by these legends and I was so, so excited to stop by one of the world's only museums dedicated to the history of not only the creatures but also the people who spend their lives searching for them.  Totally worth the $7 entry fee!

As you can see, Bigfoot was really the star of the show here.  They even had a whole section devoted to the Harry And The Hendersons movie from my youth.  Oh, and I totally remember when the guys from GA tried to pull the wool over everyone's eyes with their fake Bigfoot body.  Wow.

Can you tell who was the one really excited to be at the museum and who was the one wishing they could get over to Enterprise Records.  Hmmmm.

I highly recommend stopping by if you're a) in the Portland, Maine area b) love stuff like this c) love quirky collections that aren't necessarily 'scientific' but are a heap of fun and d) have about an hour of spare time.  Two big(foot) thumbs up!
