What this post should be titled is 'some of my favorite movies ever no matter if it's Halloween or a Tuesday in March'. I not only own all these movies on DVD but on VH-frickin'-S too! I've watched each one at least three times this year and they're slated for another round this month. Oh, and they are not super gory/scary because I don't do that kind of thing unless it's Guillermo del Toro and then I'm sold. Crimson Peak opens this weekend y'all! Omgomgomgomg.
*ahem*
Back to the list!
In no particular order we have the following awesome movies:

The Craft Not only did this female-centric movie about 4 friends using witchcraft to make their deepest, and sometimes sad/weird/bad, dreams come true kick mucho ass to a young(er) Jennifer but it inspired so much fashion fierceness that another generation is wearing this stuff - chokers, knee socks, white button down shirts, plaid - again...at least in Athens, GA. Nancy's eyeliner game was so strong that it can't be stopped by time! And that scene on the beach where everything washed up dead? And the bugs on Nancy? And the mirror thing? Whoa! Tricky, tricky, tricky. I must admit I was sad to see such a breakdown of friendship but if at the end you're doing everything for the wrong reason then I guess it's bound to implode.
There's a remake of this in the works for some god-awful reason. Ugh.

Practical Magic Okay, I maaaaay be biased but I have to say that the Aunts were my favorite characters in this movie that IN ALMOST NO WAY RESEMBLED THE BOOK. Usually I hate it when that happens but I still love the movie version of Practical Magic so very, very much. I mean, again, look at the clothes! And their house and greenhouse and garden and view and even the town with the bitchy-eventually-turned-nice women are things my dreams are made of. Plus it was directed by my older man crush Griffin Dunne...who you might recognize from the dark comedy/horror film An American Werewolf In London.
I guess I should mention some plot, eh? A one line synopsis would be 'two sisters break a family curse by discovering that the bond of love for each other is the strongest magic out there'. They also float off their roof at Halloween and look fabulous doing so.

The Mummy This tongue-in-cheek comedy/action film about an initially gross looking but then completely reanimated mummy, a curse, scarabs that eat flesh like no tomorrow, and the budding romance between a somewhat dundering tough dude with great hair and a fetching yet prickly librarian, also with great hair, is one of my top fun movies of all time. Brady won't watch it with me anymore because I say the lines out loud a lot. I've got them memorized and I even try to sound like the individual characters. It's kind of lame but, hey, it's fun too. I've never said I was one of the cool kids! Yes, the CGI is a bit wonky. Yes, it spawned 2 questionable sequels (that I still love!). Yes, I have a thing for the clothes Evelyn wears. Yes, I have a thing for Egyptian British Empire era movies thanks to my Dad the anglophile. Yes, I think Brendan Frasier is super hot in this movie. Wow, y'all are learning a lot about me from my movie choices...

Ghostbusters Duh. I mean, look at those faces. Those men starred in a great and funny film where ghosts and EPA agents and a huge marshmallow monster and a mohawked deity ran amok. Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis were amazing as the dog creatures as well as their human roles as a somewhat snotty cello player and a nerdy accountant. Two thumbs up 4EVAH!

The Lost Boys At turns campy and angsty, this 1987 vampire movie that rocked my childhood and inspired my dream to move out to California when I became a grownup. I'm still not sure I qualify as a 'grownup' but my years in Southern California were void of mullets, spandex, motorcyles and neon colors. For the most part. There's still always and forever Venice Beach!

What's your favorite Halloween movie? Do you like scary, gory, funny or all of the above?

I like it all! I have sooooo many favorites, I definitely prefer 70s and 80s horror more than anything and that includes the slashers and Italian horror stuff. I am also a big Guillermo del Toro fan and he can do no wrong. :)
ReplyDeleteOooooh! Italian horror? Tell me more!
DeleteThis list is SPOT ON! I definitely love watching all of these movies during October, I also do enjoy watching Hocus Pocus and the made for TV movie (that inspired the tv show) Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
ReplyDeleteThere are four (4!) people I work with that have never seen Ghostbusters. I don't even know what to do with that! How? Why!?! I might have to have a screening at my house or something!
DeleteI love Hocus Pocus too but I've never seen the Sabrina TTW movie. I watched the series quite often (Salem was my favorite character) so I need to see the movie STAT. :)
Yes yes to all of this!! Horror movies are my thing and there are heaps of brilliant movies coming up over the next couple of weeks.
ReplyDeleteThe Lost Boys is my all time favourite movie from when I was a kid and I still like watching it when it's on cable now and if I'm honest ... the same goes for the Craft :D All great choices Jen and am waiting to see Crimson Peak also!
(@ Marilyn above, 70s and 80s horrors are awesome, I never like the remakes, the originals are always the best)
I just watched An American Werewolf In London & Re-Animator for the first time and I'm hooked on those type of 'horror'. I think it's because they have a bit of tongue-in-cheek absurdity and humor subtly included. They're fun! Now Hostel, The Ring, The Grudge or any modern stuff like that? Can't do that. Nope nope nopenopenope.
DeleteI need recommendations for more good horror from 70's & 80's! Let me know some! :D
