Shelburne Museum - Shelburne, VT...
14 September 2015
I'm a sucker for museums that have people dressed in period costumes or have working farms or showcase folk artists and crafts or, in this case, ALL OF THOSE THINGS! Shelburne Museum is a huge place with a ton of different interests represented within its sprawling green area. Glassware? Yep. Ceramics out the wazoo? Done! A steamboat? Sure thing! Wait, what? There were even gardens where every single item is grown for dyeing purposes...
It was hot as heck while I was there but the passing rain storm cooled everything off...and that Ben & Jerry's ice cream cone helped a bit too!
The Ticonderoga everyone! It was massive and when the whistle blew it scared the bajeezus out of me. There's a great article about how the boat got to the museum here and more general info here. It may seem like the boat is, pun intended, like a duck out of water in regards to the other exhibits at the museum but it truly fit right in...
I'd go back to the museum in a heartbeat. I want to sit in front of their Wyeth for about an hour (it's this one) and see more of the Grandma Moses exhibit.

I love the Shelburne Museum! I don't know if you'll have time for it this trip, but if you like folk art/costumed interpreters/historical reenactments/historic homes, you might really like Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth NH. A local historical society relocated several buildings from the 17th century to (I think) early 20th century on one site and they are a mix of historic interiors and interpretative museum exhibits. Plus Portsmouth is an awesome, quirky, historic town.
