Meet The Critters...

Vienna

That face.  I love that face so much.  It melts my heart.

Vienna was the first foster-then-adopt dog I ever took into my home...almost 14 years ago.

I need to start by saying that Vienna's story has a very difficult beginning.  I don't want to make anyone too sad but the reality is that bad things happen to good doggies.  That's why animal advocacy is such an important thing.  So, if you only want the happy stuff then I suggest you skip the following paragraph and move on to the other sections.

Vienna's tale begins with her tied up in one bag and her newborn puppies tied up in another, and all were thrown from a moving car (containing super evil people) into the marshes of Glynn County, GA.  A kind person saw the incident happen, stopped to see what was going on, and when they heard Vienna barking they immediately risked their own life to try to save the doggies from the dark water. Vienna was rescued.  Her puppies were not rescued in time.  If anyone tells you that dogs are stupid animals and have no feelings, well, then that person is an idiot.  Vienna mourned her puppies for weeks and even took to carrying around a small stuffed doggy that she 'cleaned' regularly.  My heart still aches for her loss after all these years...

Completing heartworm treatments that seemed to last forever, Vienna was given a clean bill of health and had a pep in her step that hadn't been there before.  She became more active and started playing with my then boyfriend's dogs.  She became even feistier and ate jellyfish whenever we walked to the beach.  My Mother took an extra special shine to Vienna and would sneak into my house while I was at work and take her home with her.  Vienna was right by my side when I moved to Valdosta but she missed my ex's dogs.  A new influx of foster dog companions brought her happiness but nothing compared to how her life changed when Brady entered the picture.  She is obsessed with Brady and he loves her to bits.  Just look at this...

Yep.  She's Brady's girl.

Vienna smiles.  Her ears always stick up when she sleeps.  She has the gnarliest nails of any dog in the world because her quick is so long that we can't cut them short.  Tick-tick-tick on the floor let's you know where she's going...which is usually to the cat food bowl.  Sneaky girl!  She has a heart condition that is being controlled with medication and weight loss.  So, we are always tussling with her desire for extra, and very unneeded, food.  She sounds like a 100 pound dog when she barks but acts like a puppy when it comes to car rides.  Her snoring is so loud that I've actually been unable to sleep...pillow over my head and everything.  She's always the first to welcome you to the house.  Kitties are her friends...sometimes.

This dog is a pretty amazing creature and I'm lucky to have fostered/adopted her.  I highly suggest that you consider adoption or fostering instead of buying a pet from a puppy mill or pet store.  And, like Bob Barker always said, help control the pet population...spay and/or neuter your pet today!

  1. How can people be that cruel?! That made me cry, I just don't understand the logic that goes behind people killing animals.

But I am happy that those kind people were able to save Vienna so you could eventually adopt her. She looks so adorable.

And yes yes yes YES to adoption and spaying/neutering. There is never a reason to buy a pet because there are so many out there that want a home and love.

You, Jennifer, are an angel to animals. =D

  2. Hello! I just found your blog through Nearsighted Owl and I'm a new follower. Once I finally live in a home that allows pets (my current landlord doesn't), I would love to get a dog and will definitely be adopting. Vienna's story is so touching and I'm so glad it has a happy ending.

  3. Thank you for sharing this story! Vienna is very blessed to have such a wonderful family after such a rough beginning. Her story is the reason I love dogs so much- they have an amazing capacity for growth and love despite what damage humans may have caused them along the way (something we all could learn from). Thanks to you and your husband for being a great dog mom and dad, and to your mom for being an awesome dog gramma. This story made my day!

  6. Cutest doggy! I am not most fond of dogs but I have been deeply attached to a few animals I've lived with and love hearing other people's stories.

A big boo to Glynn County, too. That is where I live at the moment and there are a heartbreaking number of neglected/abandoned animals wandering around everywhere.

  8. Vienna is such a sweetheart. This was such a beautiful post.
I too am such an animal lover, and have adopted both of my babies and I ama always spreading the word of adoption/rescue whenever I hear of someone wanting a new animal. It is amazing how many people still have such little knowledge about the whole issue.

  9. Hi! New follower here :] (Found you through Passionfruit's directory, actually!) Love your style, your photos, and especially your pup! Is she a dachshund/mix? I also have a dachshund named Calla Lily. She's long, but a bit bigger than normal... I like to compare her to a summer sausage when normal dachshunds are like breakfast sausages! Anyway, she was in a similar situation as well. She was also pregnant and lost all of her puppies :[ The world has bad people, but plenty of amazing people like you - advocating for animals like that. Good for you ♥

  12. definitely. how could you not keep her? she's a sweetie! And her story! i wanna cry. i did a lot of rescue work back in cincinnati and met lots of dogs with hard stories - and both my dogs are rescues. one was almost euthanized and pulled by a rescue. my other got adopted then returned less than 30 minutes later due to his vicious bark. dogs are amazing creatures, for sure, and have so many amazing emotions. loveee this post!

  13. I'm so glad that you all stopped by and read my post about sweetie Vienna...and she is too! She looooooves attention. She's the real hero of the story...still able to love so much despite the lack of 'humanity' shown to her by those stupid @!^$*#*&%(&#$!)* people who tossed her from that car.

I love meeting people with so many kind words about animals, rescue, foster and adoption. And I really love hearing about the rescue critters that you all call furry family. The more we talk about it and make others aware that so many animals are in need then the more change we can bring to the issue. Thanks so much for supporting that!

If you have any pet stories that you've shared on your blog then please leave a link so we can all follow the adventures. :)

  14. I just adopted a dog that looks a lot like Vienna. We think he's part chihuahua and part dachshund. Vienna's story is heartbreaking. I'm glad that you adopted her, and that she's a happy doggy now.

    1. We're glad to have Vienna too. I couldn't imagine her not being a part of our lives. She's a Chihuahua/Dach mix too! Her body is so big compared to those skinny little legs. :) Congrats on your new adoption!

  15. Sweet little Vienna....those ears and those eyes and that adorable little white face. She didn't deserve that awful thing that happened to her and oh, her poor puppies. Those people will have to answer for that one day. I'll never understand why people don't just drop animals off at the pound if they aren't going to keep them. It's hard to understand what darkness lives in the hearts of some people. I'm glad she's in your life now and you're in hers. Your post makes me want to do individual posts on my kitty rescues. I just might! :)

    1. I would love to read about your kitty rescues! Link me up if you do! And I think it would be great to have more and more of the pet abuse/neglect/overpopulation/etc issues out in the public sphere.
